Family Fireworks Are A Safe And Enjoyable Experience For The Whole Family<\/b><\/p>\n
Dear Editor,<\/p>\n
In your Community piece ‘Tips for Halloween’ dated October 21st; the author stated that fireworks use should only be left to the hands of the professionals, a tip that was courtesy of the Town of Langley Fire Department.\u00a0 Though attending a public display of fireworks is an exhilarating experience, we at the Canadian National Fireworks Association (CNFA) believe that fireworks are not only for professional use but can be safely enjoyed by the whole family!<\/p>\n
As with all flammable products, caution must be taken when handling them. Fireworks do not cause injuries; it is the misuse of fireworks that leads to injuries and property damage.\u00a0 As a society, we must all take responsibility for ensuring that the appropriate measures are taken when selling, storing and\/or discharging fireworks.<\/p>\n
According to statistics provided by Emergency Management BC, in the past 24 years, there have been 7 injuries and 0 deaths attributable to legal fireworks in British Columbia. In 2012, 0.42% of all fires in BC were attributable to fireworks; more fires are attributable to candles and ovens.\u00a0 This serves to underscore the fact that fireworks are not a significant cause of injury, death or damage.<\/p>\n
Fireworks have been used in celebrations for centuries.\u00a0 They unite friends and family.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We all must do our part to ensure they continue to safely be an important part of our tradition.<\/p>\n
