Transportation – You have purchased some consumer fireworks, now how do you get them home?:

Transportation in a passenger vehicle

The road transportation of fireworks is governed in part by the Transport of Dangerous Good (TDG) directives of Transport Canada and in part by the Explosives Regulations, Part VI.

Smoking on, in, or while attending any vehicle carrying fireworks is prohibited.

Fireworks should not be transported in the passenger compartment of a vehicle. They should be transported in the trunk. Accelerants such as gas must not be carried in the trunk with fireworks.

The maximum quantity for transport in passenger vehicles for personal use is 100 kg (25 kg Net Explosive Quantity)

There is a maximum exemption that can be transported in passenger vehicles. For transporting quantities exceeding 150 kg in passenger vehicles, you must adhere to the TDG rules for appropriate transportation requirementsAnything over 150kg they should take a course on Transportation of Dangerous goods as this course does not cover that. (Perry to investigate getting a TDG online training course on board as an affiliate).

What this means is that if you are taking more than 150 kg gross weight (which is equivalent to five (5) 30 kg boxes) you will be required to:

  • have Dangerous Goods declarations paperwork.
  •  have the products sealed in UN tested boxes.
  • TDG Certification (provides by other in person or online companies).

Taking your fireworks home and Lighting Fireworks

  • Fireworks should be transported in the trunk/back of the vehicle
  • Keep fireworks in a cool, dry, ventilated place, out of reach of children
  • Choose a wide, clear site away from all obstacles (i.e. 30m x 30m)
  • Do not discharge in windy conditions
  • Read all instructions on the fireworks and plan the order of the firing before you begin
  • Use a good firing base such as a bucket, box, or wheelbarrow filled with earth or sand
  • Bury fireworks that do not have a base halfway in the earth or sand unless the label indicates otherwise. Set them at a 10 degree angle, pointing away from people.
  • Never try to light a firework or hold a lit firework in your hand unless the manufacturer indicates they are designed to be hand held.
  • Any minors (under the age of 18) must be closely supervised by an adult.
  • Light carefully. Always light the fuse at the tip.
  • Keep water nearby and always dispose of used fireworks (including debris) in
    bucket of water
  • Never try to relight a dud firework or fix a firework that appears defective. Wait at least 30 minutes before approaching what appears to be a dud firework.

Clean up & Disposal

  • Wait 30 minutes after lighting your last firework before you go back to clean up the left over product and debris
  • It is always best to water down the fireworks with a hose or submerge them in a pail of water after 30 minutes to ensure there are no leftover embers.
